Not many comedy-dramas do character development like the US version of Shameless. Over the years, almost every character on display in the Showtime original has become popular among the masses, including Cameron Monaghan's Ian Gallagher, who is one of the most entertaining persons one could ever wish to find.

Just like everyone else in the series, Ian deals with his daily life problems living in the Southside of Chicago, while being involved in a lot of interesting storylines; ranging from simple relationship problems to becoming Gay Jesus. Whatever he does, it has to be said, Ian is a proper Gallagher. Here are some questions about him, answered.
What's His Relationship History?
Ian has had interesting relationships in the series, ranging from dating random dudes to an old man for money. But the only one that has left the fans dying for more is his relationship with Mickey Milkovich.

The biggest reason for that is the fact that no one saw it coming at all. And on top of that, they form a brilliant pair and are so entertaining to watch. In the tenth season, Mickey and Ian had a marriage in the finale, which coincidentally proved to be the best episode of the season.
What's The Worst Thing He Has Done?
One of the things Ian wouldn't be proud of in his life is stealing Svetlana's baby from her but at least, he has his Bipolar to blame for that.
However, the worst thing Ian has done (and he cannot blame it on Bipolar) is stealing and seducing a married old man, just for a couple of bucks. He had Mickey take out their video so that he could blackmail him into getting some money.

What's The Best Thing He Has Done?
Ian is a very good man, at heart. He is someone who would be willing to risk his life to save a stranger and that's just how he has always been; willing to make a difference. One such thing he did was by playing the messiah of the people whose voices were being kept down.

The Gay Jesus storyline was really very good because it showed the leader in Ian. He matured to lead a movement against injustice and to some extent, he was able to make a difference.
How Is His Relationship With Frank Gallagher?

Ian is the only one who doesn't show his hate for Frank Gallagher with his looks. While Lip, Debbie, Carl, Liam, and Fiona share a heated relationship with Frank, Ian just doesn't seem to care enough to even talk to him.
And that's understandable because Ian isn't the son of Frank, instead, his father is Gary Bennett. He learned the truth when his blood group wasn't compatible with his siblings. Safe to say, he didn't like the truth.
Is He The Only One Who Loves Monica?
Ian is one of the only members of the family who seem to care about their mother, Monica Gallagher and there's a huge reason for that.

They share a similarity in their Bipolar disorder, and these kinds of things do seem to get people together. Ian knows what Monica goes through on a daily basis and Monica does likewise. It was very tough for Ian to get over the death of his mother.
Whose His Best Friend In The Series?
Just like the whole Gallagher family, Ian isn't that great at making friends outside his own community and he hasn't really had many friends other than Mandy Milkovich and his own brother, Lip Gallagher.
And to add to his frustrations, Mandy and Lip shared an intimate relationship, which meant Ian found himself in the middle of all the fuss. As of right now, Ian only has Lip as his true friend; they tell each other almost everything.

Does He Have A Knack Of Finding Trouble?
Another thing that Ian has taken from his mother is his addiction to a frantic lifestyle. It's as if he can't handle the quiet; he wants to live life like an adventure and all of his decisions seem to lead him towards danger.

His husband, Mickey is a wanted criminal who might or might not be a total psychopath capable of killing anyone. Moreover, Ian, over the years, has stolen a baby and he became Gay Jesus before finding himself in prison.
Does He Hate Fiona?

Fiona is more like a mother to the Gallagher children because she is the one who brought them up and taught them the rules of the Southside. Fiona herself had a knack of taking Ian's decisions, which was acceptable when he was a child but when he became an adult, Fiona continued to try and have a say.
Ian didn't like it, obviously and towards the end, he did start drifting away from her, telling her to mind her own business. But by no means does he hate her, instead, he could give his life for her.
Is He Childish Or Mature?
Ian is a bit of both, actually, even when he is on his medication. When he is not on his medication, he is the biggest man child anyone could ever wish to see but that's understandable because heis bipolar.

Although he does show some signs of maturity now, Ian does have a knack of doing childish things, ranging from peeing in a scooter to wanting to be in jail because, apparently, his work there wasn't done.
Does He Have "Commitment" Problems?
Again, this is one more thing Monica and Ian have in common. Both of them tend to use the excuse of Bipolar to get out of the situations in which commitment is required, especially in a relationship, even though Ian knows that if he continues taking his meds, his mood swings wouldn't happen and he could easily commit to a single thing in his life.
In season ten, he didn't want to marry Mickey because of this very problem but in the end, he did come over his fears.
